Creating an Internet Resume
Privacy and confidentiality
Online privacy and confidentiality are essential considerations when creating an internet resume because once it is submitted to the employer or job search site, you have no control over where it ends up. Some sites ensure privacy and confidentiality while others don't, so read the terms and conditions very carefully so you know exactly how your resume will be distributed.
Regardless of how carefully you review a website's terms and conditions, it is a good idea to protect yourself further by creating your internet resume with privacy and confidentiality in mind from the start. Your goal is to include important information about your professional qualifications and make it easy for potential employers to contact you without giving away too much information and risking the loss of privacy and confidentiality.
Some key tips for accomplishing this include:
- Avoid including your phone number. If your resume somehow ends up distributed too widely or indiscriminately, this will help prevent your phone number from being picked up by junk calling lists.
- Avoid including your address. This will help prevent it from being picked up by junk email lists; if you feel it is important to include some kind of physical address, consider using a post office box instead of your residence address.
Avoid using your personal email address. Spammers and junk email lists actively troll job search and related sites for email addresses, so unless you want your inbox filled with junk email you should not include your personal email address on your internet resume. There are plenty of reputable free email services (such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) available, so set up an account with one of them specifically for use on your internet resume.
Summary
The modern job search process requires you to create several different types of resumes for use in different situations. You will always need a traditionally formatted print resume for use 'in person' and during interviews, of course, but if you want to search and apply for job online you must also create appropriate internet-ready resume types as well.
The three critical internet-ready resume types are the scannable, email, and uploadable formats. Each of these variations contains key information about your qualifications and experience, but they present that information in a manner that is appropriate for electronic purposes. They do not include fancy fonts, bullet points, or font emphases such as bold, italic, and underlined. Instead, use plain text (also called simple text) so employers can easily transfer your resume into their databases.
Keywords are also important, because employers query their databases looking for specific keywords related to specific job postings. If your resume does not include those critical keywords, it will not show up for consideration. Finally, keep privacy and confidentiality considerations in mind as well. Limit the amount of personal information in your resume to avoid its potential misuse by others.
